Mindful Movement
Pilates is a complete method
of physical and mental conditioning developed by Joseph
H. Pilates (1880-1967). He
sought a way to build his body and attain a state of
optimum health. He discovered the importance of strengthening
and utilizing the body's core to support the body in
all its movements. This
focus on developing the body's core is the key to the
Pilates Method.
The Pilates method differs
from many traditional forms of exercise in its emphasis
on developing not just the body, but the mind as well,
and ultimately to coordination of the two. Movements
are mindful with close attention to form. This
makes the movements both more effective as well as enjoyable.
As we develop awareness we begin to have many more choices.
The Pilates method uses
the principles of BREATH,
AWARENESS, CONCENTRATION, CENTERING, CONTROL, PRECISION
AND FLOWING MOVEMENT applied
to a series of full body exercises to develop the body
uniformly with an equal emphasis on strength
and flexibility.
Pilates brings the body
into balance as well as develops strength, flexibility
and power through proper use of the body's true core.
Once proper use of the core
is developed, the body becomes efficient and balance
and health is reestablished.
